Helium Recovery & Purification Systems

Secure your supply and monetize raw helium with our integrated, fully modular solutions. Achieve high purity (up to 99.999%) and up to 98% recovery with Air Liquide's proven membrane and PSA technologies.

Address global helium demand with reliable, efficient recovery. Our modular purification units integrate advanced membrane and Xebec™ PSA technologies to transform low-concentration raw gas into ultra-high purity product (up to 99.999%).

Superior helium recovery: Purity and efficiency combined

Air Liquide delivers fully skidded and modularized factory-built helium solutions, from small size to large scale. Our design ensures quick construction, a predictable project schedule, lower costs, and superior quality. We offer a tailor-made approach to monetize raw helium, providing a high-purity product ready for export via tube trailers.

Key advantages

  • Ultra-high recovery: Very high helium recovery (up to 98% possible) with Air Liquide performance guarantee.
  • Purity: Product purity up to >99.999% mol.
  • Compact design: Most compact solution with a small footprint due to our integrated membrane and PSA technology.
  • Low cost & fast deployment: Low capital costs, low construction cost (fully modularized), and short lead time (typically <1 year from decision to first gas).
  • Flexible capacity: Can treat a wide range of feed flows (0.5 to 100 MMSCFD) and helium content (0.05% to 10% mol).

Proprietary technology for market leadership

Our technology is a best-in-class combination of two key processes for the most effective and compact helium purification system:

  • Air Liquide hollow fiber membrane: This poly-imide based membrane is proven and reliable for bulk separation. Helium is selectively enriched on the permeate side. It minimizes the need for extensive upstream pretreatment and offers exceptional chemical and thermal resistance.
  • Xebec™ Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA): Following the membrane, the compact Xebec™ PSA unit is used for final purification. It uses a 9-bed, fast-cycle design with a single rotary valve for superior reliability and efficiency, selectively adsorbing all remaining impurities to produce high-purity helium.
  • 35+ years of experience in gas separation membranes

  • 15+ years of experience in helium separation

  • 20+ helium purification units using ALAS membranes worldwide

  • North American helium Battle Creek facility

In April 2021, Air Liquide's Modular Helium Purifier technology was successfully commissioned at the Battle Creek facility in Saskatchewan, Canada, establishing it as the largest helium purification plant in the country. The fully skid-mounted solution was online approximately 11 months after the investment decision, operating at full capacity (up to 50 MMSCF per year) and consistently meeting purity specifications up to 99.999%.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What recovery and purity levels can Air Liquide helium systems guarantee?

Air Liquide helium recovery systems maximize recovery up to 98%. They deliver ultra-high product purity, reaching up to 99.999% mol.

Which core technologies are used in the modular helium purification units?

Air Liquide's compact solution integrates two key processes: proprietary Hollow Fiber Membrane technology and Xebec™ Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) for final purification.

Where are Air Liquide's helium purification units successfully deployed?

Air Liquide has deployed over 20 helium purification units worldwide. This proven, fully modular technology is used at facilities such as the largest helium purification plant in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Air Liquide hollow fiber membrane technology

This technology is a poly-imide based polymer membrane, where helium is separated by permeating from the high pressure side to the low pressure - permeate - side. Most of the other gases (methane and nitrogen in particular) are much less prone to permeation and will stay in the high pressure side. The membrane produces a stream with only the helium and a small amount of impurities going to the PSA.
