Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA)
A versatile, high-efficiency separation technology designed for either ultra-pure hydrogen production (up to 99.999%) or bulk CO₂ removal for advanced carbon capture.
Built with advanced solid adsorbents, PSA units reliably separate complex gas streams. They work perfectly as standalone systems or integrated with our cryogenic technology for optimal results.
Best-in-class hydrogen purification
When deployed for hydrogen production, Air Liquide PSA offers a best-in-class solution for purifying hydrogen-containing gases. Our technology utilizes the most advanced adsorbents and patented high-efficiency cycles to handle varying feed compositions, ensuring a consistent, ultra-pure hydrogen output.
Compatible hydrogen-rich feedstocks include:
- Raw hydrogen from SMR, ATR, POX and Gasification.
- Off-gases from Ethylene, Styrene, and Ammonia plants.
- Methanol plant purge gases and CCR off-gases.
- Cryogenic purification off-gases.
Bulk CO₂ removal for carbon capture
When applied as an environmental technology, the PSA process performs a bulk removal of CO₂ directly from flue gases or process streams.
This specific configuration serves as a main building block for our Cryocap™ FG and Cryocap™ Steel products. By efficiently pre-concentrating the CO₂ upstream of the cryogenic separation stage, the PSA enables heavy industries to significantly reduce the size, footprint, and operating costs of their final carbon capture infrastructure.
High efficiency and automatic operation
Regardless of the application, our PSA units are designed to balance capital investment with long-term operational efficiency. The units are compact, fully skid-mounted, and pre-tested to allow for easy outdoor installation.
The process is designed for unmanned, fully automatic operation, ensuring industry-leading reliability with on-stream factors typically exceeding 99.9%. Furthermore, the system offers high flexibility with a turndown capability as low as 20-25%.
| Parameter | Performance range |

| Hydrogen recovery rate | 60% to 90% |
| Product purity | Up to 99.9999% |
| Capex range | 1 to +10 million USD |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the maximum hydrogen purity achievable with Air Liquide PSA?
Our PSA units are an effective method of producing very pure hydrogen, reaching purity levels of up to 99.9999%.
Can the PSA unit operate without a dedicated onsite team?
Yes. The units are specifically designed for unmanned, automatic use, featuring high reliability and typical on-stream factors of more than 99.9%.
How does the PSA assist in carbon capture?
For decarbonization projects, the PSA is used to perform a bulk removal of CO₂ from flue gases. It acts as a pre-concentration step upstream of cryogenic separation systems (like Cryocap™ FG and Steel) to optimize the overall capture process.
